Artificial silk is a textile. From the eve of the Second World War this transformative textile was manufactured in a huge Lancashire factory where people from many countries worked side by side.

Filaments of silk made from the cellulose in wood we pigmented and twisted together and woven into clothes, war-time parachutes, sanitary wear including pads, items for hospitals, and many other forms. M&S used artificial silk for their popular nighties. Artificial silk was exported all over the world.
